Did You Know?

Many Radar Speed Signs May No Longer Meet Current MUTCD Standards

With the adoption of the 11th Edition of the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), roadway “Radar Speed Signs” are now formally classified as:

  • Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs (W13-20)
  • Vehicle Speed Feedback Plaques (W13-20aP)

The updated standards now include specific requirements for:

  • Sign size
  • Digit height
  • Display color
  • Mounting configuration
  • Visibility distance
  • Display behavior

That means some older or non-MUTCD-focused systems currently installed in the field may not align with today’s roadway guidance.

Key MUTCD Changes Include:

Static Displays Only

Vehicle Speed Feedback displays must remain static.

The MUTCD prohibits:

  • Flashing speed digits
  • Animated displays
  • Scrolling messages
  • Color-changing LEDs
  • Distracting graphics or messaging

Compliant systems must use:

  • Yellow digits
  • Black backgrounds
  • Speed-only displays

Sign Size Now Matters More Than Ever

The MUTCD now ties:

  • Minimum sign dimensions
  • Minimum digit height
  • Application type

directly to roadway classification and speed environment.

Signs vs. Plaques

Not all speed feedback systems are intended for the same application.

The MUTCD now differentiates between:

  • Standalone Vehicle Speed Feedback Signs
  • Vehicle Speed Feedback Plaques mounted beneath speed limit signs
